BOBOTIE MEATBALLS

I used my favourite Bobotie recipe to make meatballs. It was delicious!

  • 1 kg beef mince
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 slice brown bread
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 30 ml olive oil
  • 20 ml curry powder
  • 10 ml turmeric
  • 30 ml white wine vinegar
  • 1 egg
  • 15 ml apricot jam
  • 15 ml Worcester sauce
  • bay leaves
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Egg topping:
  • 3 eggs
  • 375 ml milk
  • salt and pepper to taste

Pre-heat the oven to 180ºC.
Place the milk in a shallow dish and soak the bread until tender. Mash with a fork.
Heat the oil and cook the onions until soft.
Add curry, turmeric and apricot jam and cook for about 2 minutes.
In a large bowl mix the mince and bread.
Now add onion mix and all the other ingredients. Mix well.
Shape into small balls and place it in prepared baking dish and add a few bay leaves on top.
Bake for 15 minutes and remove from the oven.
Prepare the egg topping by whisking the eggs, milk and salt and pepper. Pour over the meatballs.
Return the bobotie meatballs to the oven and bake until the top is golden brown – about 20 to 25 minutes.
