  • 125 g butter
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup oil
  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 1 ½ cup castor sugar
  • 65 ml cocoa powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • ½ cup butter milk

Heat butter and water on stove till butter melted. Remove from stove and stir in oil and allow to cool.
Sift together cake flour, sugar and cocoa powder in a bowl. Add cooled oil mixture and mix thoroughly.
Add eggs, vanilla essence, bicarbonate of soda and lastly buttermilk.
Mix till well combined. Grease a baking dish, pour batter and bake at 180°C preheat oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
Remove from oven and pour topping over hot cake. It will soak in nicely.
Sprinkle with almonds..

  • Topping
  • 125 g butter
  • 65 ml cocoa powder
  • ¾ cup castor sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 75 ml buttermilk

Melt butter, sugar, vanilla essence and cocoa in a pot over medium heat. Keep stirring preferably with a whisk till mixture is very thick. Still on heat add buttermilk and keep stirring till mixture is thick but runny. Pour over hot cake
